Sweeties, just when I thought Kal-El couldn’t get any more heartbreaking, Absolute Superman #9 comes along and says “hold my kryptonite bullet.” This issue picks up right after the chaos of #8 and dives deep into moral gray areas. Honey, I’m still processing it.

The Emotional Core of Issue Absolute Superman #9
Absolute Superman #9 intensely explores Kal-El’s moral conflict as he recovers with the Omega Men.
Still badly injured from the previous issue, Kal is being treated by the radical freedom fighters. The pain he endures while they try to remove the kryptonite bullets is brutal. Even with his incredible healing factor, he feels every second of it. The way he pushes through the agony while wrestling with their extreme methods is powerful stuff.
Major Plot Developments
The Omega Men have taken Kal through a Father Box to safety. They plead their case hard: that only by fully unleashing his terrifying power can they truly destroy Lazarus Corporation and Ra’s al Ghul’s empire. Primus gives a passionate speech about how Kal’s old rules won’t be enough in this brutal world.
Kal is clearly torn. He wants to fight the corruption, but he’s uncomfortable with how far the Omega Men are willing to go. Lois Lane’s subplot with Lazarus Corp continues to simmer in the background, adding even more emotional weight.
Art Direction & Visual Storytelling
Rafa Sandoval continues to deliver strong emotional depth and dynamic action in Absolute Superman #9.
The medical scenes are especially visceral, you really feel Kal’s pain through the panel layouts and body language. The coloring shifts beautifully between the cold clinical tones of the procedure and the fiery intensity of the ideological debates.
Standout Moment: The Kryptonite Extraction
Okay, sweeties… let me talk about the page that absolutely wrecked me in Absolute Superman #9.
There’s this brutal, visceral sequence where the Omega Men are trying to remove the kryptonite bullets from Kal’s body. He’s in so much pain that even he can’t hide it. In one raw, unforgettable moment, Kal has to literally help pull the fragments out of himself while screaming in agony. The way Rafa Sandoval draws his face, the clenched teeth, the tears in his eyes, the sheer suffering, it broke something in me.
I actually had to put the comic down for a second.
Here’s the most powerful man in the world, reduced to this vulnerable, hurting state… and he still keeps fighting. That single sequence is one of the most human moments we’ve seen from this version of Superman so far. It’s not just “he’s injured”, you feel how much it costs him. The panel where he roars in pain while energy explodes around him? Chef’s kiss levels of heartbreaking and badass at the same time.
This moment alone makes the whole issue worth reading. It reminded me why I love this run so much, they’re not afraid to show Kal’s pain.

How #9 Connects to the Larger Absolute Superman Run
Since his explosive debut in Issue #1, Kal-El has been a man caught between two worlds, his Kryptonian heritage and his desire for a normal life on Earth. This issue builds beautifully on that foundation.
The Omega Men represent a darker path: fighting fire with fire. Watching Kal wrestle with their ideology while still clinging to his own values feels like natural progression from the loneliness we saw in Smallville. It deepens the central question of Jason Aaron’s run: In a broken world, how far is too far?
Overall Verdict
Absolute Superman #9 is a strong, character-driven chapter that slows things down just enough to let the moral weight really sink in. Jason Aaron is cooking with this arc, the tension between Kal’s ideals and the Omega Men’s radical methods is deliciously complicated.
Final Rating: 8.5/10
This one left me genuinely torn right alongside Kal. How far would you go to protect what you love?
Stay strong, stay hopeful, comic crew.
