Sweeties, after the mind-bending Brainiac horror show in Issue #7, I was really hoping Kal-El would get at least one peaceful moment. But nooo, Absolute Superman #8 kicks off the brand-new “Son of the Demon” arc by smashing those hopes in the most heartbreaking way possible. Honey, this issue genuinely moved me.

The Emotional Core of Absolute Superman #8
Absolute Superman #8 deeply explores Kal-El’s profound isolation despite his immense power.
He returns to Smallville hoping for a quiet reunion with Martha Kent, the woman who raised him after he crashed to Earth as a scared teenager. What he finds instead is devastating. Martha is suffering from advanced dementia and barely recognizes her own son anymore. The way Kal sits with her, gentle and patient, trying so hard to hold onto whatever pieces of her memory are left… I teared up in my latte, no joke.

It’s such a raw, human moment. Here’s the most powerful being on the planet, and all he wants is something so simple, a feeling of home. Jason Aaron nails that emotional ache perfectly.
Major Plot Developments
This issue officially launches the “Son of the Demon” arc, and it wastes no time raising the stakes. Ra’s al Ghul reappears as the mysterious and calculating head of Lazarus Corporation, a sleek, dangerous corporate empire with serious immortality ambitions. This version of Ra’s feels fresh, modern, and genuinely threatening.
Lois Lane shows up as a high-ranking field agent working for Lazarus Corp, which instantly creates delicious tension. Jimmy Olsen is tied to the Omega Men, and poor Agent Smith (Peacemaker) gets horrifically upgraded by Brainiac tech into a monstrous cybernetic killing machine. The action that breaks out in Smallville is intense, personal, and brutal.
Art Direction & Visual Storytelling
Rafa Sandoval’s return delivers both dynamic energy and emotional depth in Absolute Superman #8.
His linework feels especially strong during the explosive fights, but it’s the quieter Smallville scenes that truly shine. The way he draws Kal’s restrained grief and Martha’s confusion is powerful. You can feel the emotional distance in every panel. Ulises Arreola’s coloring is excellent too, the warm golden Kansas tones during the Martha scenes clash beautifully with the cold, metallic corporate aesthetic of Lazarus Corp. It’s smart, intentional visual storytelling that makes the central conflict feel even more alive.
Standout Page of Absolute Superman #8: The Kansas Beatdown
One page in particular completely stole the show for me.
In a full-page spread, we see a heavily armored, glowing Superman unleashing absolute fury on an enemy. The bright orange energy lines against the black suit, the explosive red background, and that killer line, “YOU SHOULD’VE STAYED THE HELL AWAY FROM KANSAS!”, it’s pure power fantasy done right.

This panel is everything I love about Absolute Superman: Kal protecting the place he calls home with raw, unfiltered rage. The visual intensity, the dynamic composition, and the glowing energy effects make it one of the most memorable pages in the entire run so far. I genuinely stared at it for a while. Absolute chef’s kiss.
How #8 Connects to the Larger Absolute Superman Run
Since his explosive debut in Issue #1, where we saw a grizzled, exiled Kryptonian crash-landing into a world that fears and hunts him, Kal-El has been defined by isolation and constant struggle. This issue brings that theme full circle in such a personal way.
The Smallville return directly echoes the emotional beats we saw in Issues #3 through #6, where Kal tried to reconnect with his past. But the heartbreaking scene with Martha raises the emotional stakes significantly higher. It shows how even the few anchors he has left are slowly slipping away.
This builds beautifully on the revolutionary rage established early in the series. He wants to fight for a better world, but he also desperately craves the simple life that was taken from him. The introduction of Lazarus Corporation feels like a natural evolution from the Brainiac threat in Issue #7. Where Brainiac was cold cosmic horror, Ra’s brings calculated, earth-bound menace. It expands the scope of the Absolute Universe while keeping the focus firmly on Kal’s internal struggle: Can a man forged in revolution ever find peace, or is he destined to keep fighting forever?
Overall Verdict Absolute Superman #8 is a confident and emotionally grounded start to the new arc. It balances high-stakes action with meaningful character exploration while setting up intriguing conflicts for the issues ahead.
Final Rating: 8.7/10
This one left me thinking about how even the strongest heroes just want somewhere to call home. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go hug my Superman collectibles and whisper “You deserve better, baby. Smallville peace should be mandatory.”
Stay strong, stay hopeful, comic crew. Kat ✨
